A clear plan after the roadside stop

Answer a few questions about the report, correction status and record concern. Your results separate urgent safety work from paperwork and evidence review.

From an inspection to a documented response

The planner covers four connected tasks: correcting the findings, completing inspection paperwork, keeping any court citation on its own track, and deciding what evidence a potential DataQ request needs. It does not estimate a success rate.

Deciding how to respond to a related court citation? Use the Traffic Ticket Cost & CSA Impact Planner to compare the fine, attorney fees and conditional SMS outcomes while keeping the court deadline separate from your inspection follow-up.

Pair your plan with the Roadside Inspection Response Checklist and Vehicle Maintenance & Repair Log. For a crash preventability question, use the separate Crash Preventability Eligibility & Submission Planner.

Common questions

Who is this inspection planner for?

Safety managers, fleet owners and owner-operators handling a U.S. roadside inspection report. Use it to organize one inspection at a time, with the report and any out-of-service notice nearby.

Can DataQs remove a violation because it was repaired?

A later repair does not by itself establish that the original violation was incorrect. A DataQ review needs a supported record issue or an applicable citation outcome. Complete required corrective actions regardless of a dispute.

Does every vehicle inspection report have to be returned?

Under current 49 CFR 396.9, carriers must certify corrections within 15 days and retain the report for 12 months. Return of the vehicle report is required when requested by the issuing state. Driver HOS out-of-service reports have a separate certification and return requirement under 49 CFR 395.13. Follow the actual report and applicable state instructions.

Does the tool submit a DataQ or release an out-of-service order?

No. It produces a follow-up plan from your answers. The responsible agency decides DataQ requests, and the actual out-of-service conditions control whether operation may resume.
