Find Your DOT PIN in 5 Minutes

Where Can I Find My Dot Pin Number? This is a question that many of our clients ask!

When you complete your registration for your US DOT authority, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) sends you a letter with your DOT PIN on it.

If you’re like me, any snail mail that comes to your office probably gets thrown away or misplaced before it finds its way to your desk.

But, try looking in your paper files or scanned documents for it first.

DOT PIN Frequently Asked Questions

What Is A Dot Pin Number?

A DOT PIN (Personal Identification Number) is an 8 digit combination of letters and numbers that are used to identify a motor carrier when they’re dealing with the FMCSA or the United States Department of Transportation (US DOT).

Why is the US DOT PIN important?

Trucking an bus companies use their FMCSA PIN anytime that you access your company information on a DOT of FMCSA website.
Basically, it’s an access code.

You’ll need your DOT PIN if you want to do things like:

Review your complete FMCSA CSA data
Respond to a DOT audit request
Update your MCS 150 ( FMCSA biennial update)

Log into your FMCSA Portal for the first time

What is the USDOT PIN format?

The FMCSA PIN format is NLNNLLNL (N means number and L means letter). So, a sample PIN may be 0F678LF4H.

This is very important when it comes to figuring out if a digit in your PIN is a Zero or the letter “O” as they look a lot alike.

Now that you know the format, you’ll know that first 0 should be the number 0 and not the letter O.

Wrapping Up

Your PIN is a very important piece of information and you should safeguard it.

The FMCSA sent this to you when you first registered for your US DOT authority. But, you may have misplaced it.

You can have the DOT re-send your PIN in about 10 minutes by completing their short online form.
