Policies & Procedures

Quick Tips

  1. Be careful what you include in your policies and procedures! Not doing what you say that you're going to do in your policies can be held against you in court
  2. Try to avoid long lists of rules
  3. Be clear about expectations and what happens when those expectations aren't met
  4. You must document compliance with your policies! If a driver is disciplined, document the event and how your responded. Keep those documents.

Every great safety and compliance program begins with detailed and easy to understand policies and procedures.

The FMCSA has developed a framework named the "Safety Management Cycle".

DOT Inspectors use these "best practices" to compare your organization against what they feel should be done to have an effective safety and compliance management program in place.

It's a great idea to become familiar with the elements of this framework and try to implement as much of each section into your operation as possible.
