What is the HOS Compliance BASIC?

The HOS Compliance BASIC is one of the most important CSA BASIC scores and it deals with violations of the FMCSA Hours of Service Regulations.

The HOS Compliance BASIC relates to the operation of CMVs by drivers who are ill, fatigued, or in noncompliance with the HOS regulations.

What are some common HOS compliance BASIC violations?

This BASIC category includes violations of regulations pertaining to driver’s records of duty status (RODS), electronic logging devices (ELD) and management of CMV driver fatigue.

Some examples of common hours of service violations Include:

  • 395.8e False report of drivers record of duty status 
  • 395.8AELD ELD – No record of duty status (ELD Required)
  • 395.8 Record of Duty Status violation (general/form and manner)
  • 395.24D ELD cannot transfer ELD records electronically
  • 395.8F01 Drivers record of duty status not current
  • 395.22H4 Driver failed to maintain supply of blank drivers records of duty status graph-grids
  • 395.24C2III Driver failed to manually add shipping document number
  • 395.3A3PROP Driving beyond 11 hour driving limit
  • Failing to preserve HOS supporting documents

A truck driver could also be cited for a log falsification violation if they misuse common hours of service regulation exceptions like those relating to using the short haul exemption, personal conveyance or the adverse driving conditions exception.
